What is Unity Day Houston? |

Unity Day is more than an afternoon of simple festivities and
free entertainment. It is a cultural experience that any family can enjoy.
Saturday, August 23, 2008, the communities of Houston will unite to
celebrate their diverse heritages. Despite religion, ethic background, or
social status, Houstonians will gather to promote unity in humanity. We are not creating a day, but a
tradition that will eliminate prejudice and crush social barriers based upon
family income.
Right now, the pressures of
society and the consistent growth of our surrounding communities has driven
many people to demand change. We believe that Unity Day Houston will be a catalyst for change. It is crucial that we
lay no less than one day aside to examine what we’ve done and what we will do
to uphold and observe unity. Daily
we encounter people with different lifestyles and backgrounds without making
any effort to know them. The plan
of Unity Day Houston is to
encourage people to embrace our cultural and social differences by displaying
the beautiful aspects of as many cultures as possible. By advocating interaction through games
and crowd participation, we believe the multicultural attendees will take the
spirit of Unity Day beyond the
day’s festivities.
Tragedies such as September
11th in New York, the Tsunami in Sri Lanka, along with hurricanes
Katrina and Rita in New Orleans and Houston has taught us all that at some
point we will either lend or need a helping hand. Although that hand may be
from an unknown individual, pain transcends all cultural barriers. Why wait
until tragedy strikes to reach out. Start now, commit to unity and ignite a cycle of change.
